Majoring in Journalism

The time has finally come for many students to face the challenge known as college. With that comes one of the most important decisions to make. What do I aspire to be and what do I need to do to get there? In short, the answer is found in the major that one chooses. I have been faced with the same question and decided on working towards a major in communications and journalism. Choosing this major made sense to me based on my love for journalism and the desire I have to communicate with people through writing and broadcasting. It is a necessity to have in order to one day become a successful editor for a well known magazine. I find communications very important in today’s society and a great ability to have for young, prospective professionals.

Although, what may be the most useful major for me and my potential career, may not be the best for everyone else. In order to become successful in anything that a person does there has to be a drive, and a passion. Communications is very important to me but that doesn’t mean that just anyone will be good at it. Nor does it mean that others will find the same intrigue in it. If all were to choose a similar major, there would be no variety. The field of communications would lack enthusiasm and possibly even talent. Focusing on a single major could result in losing talented doctors, teachers, artists, and other people that form our society. The major that one chooses needs to be one that fuels their passion and their talent. It should not be one that is chosen based on what seems best by the world.

All in all, the ability to shape one’s future lies in that person and in the dedication that they hold, not in the major they have. This is why I am working towards my goal of receiving a major in journalism. Even though it is a competitive field, I know that by applying myself and working that much harder, I will be able to be successful.
